What “matching” means
The layout picker shows which template is active: a system preset (Client’s Website, Shop Manager, etc.), Default, Custom, or one of your saved layouts.
EdminBoost compares your saved top bar and sidebar to known templates. Small edits after applying a preset often switch the picker to Custom even though the site still “feels” like that preset.
Picker shows Custom but you expected a named preset
Usually normal. You changed Top Bar or Menu Studio after apply. The layout can still be based on that preset; the label is just Custom.
To name it again: Layout Presets → Save current layout as preset.
Wrong layout for a logged-in user
- Role assignments (most common)
The first assigned role on the user’s account wins.
- Layout Presets → role assignment dropdowns.
- Put the most specific role first in WordPress if you use multiple roles, or simplify to one role per user for testing.
- No assignment for that role
Users without an assignment get the global top bar and Menu Studio saved in settings—not another role’s preset.

Both should apply the same preset. If they disagree, open Layout Presets, select the intended preset, Save once to sync.
Applying a preset “undid” sidebar work
Applying a preset on save replaces the sidebar baseline from that template.
- Save a custom preset snapshot before applying a new template.
- Custom sidebar links are usually kept, but order and hide rules may change.
Picker name does not match previews
- Refresh the page after Save.
- If you used Reset to defaults, click Save to persist—or refresh without saving to undo reset.
Active preset vs Top Bar canvas differ
- Top Bar shows what is stored for top bar items; role resolution may swap items per user.
- Test as the target role, not only as administrator.
Import changed everything
JSON import replaces settings. Preset assignments and custom presets come from the file—not what you had before import.
Tips
- Document “Editor → Client’s Website, Shop manager → Shop Manager.”
- After plugin installs, reopen Layout Presets so new menu slugs appear in the matrix and previews stay accurate.
